Alberta Innovates Grant for Burn Research

With the assistance of the CFBTS Dr. Jeff Biernaskie and Dr. Vincent Gabriel of the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Centre have received the Alberta Innovates Provincial Grant! This $1.125 million dollar grant provides funding for at least three years to help improve wound healing for burn survivors. The CBFTS is also proud to announce we have contributed an additional $300,000 dollars to the three year project.

Eight year old Brody Lindgren, with the blessing of his mother Heidi generously donated his piggy bank to the “Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society” (CFBTS) in November.

Brody’s generosity comes at a time of great leaps and bounds our Society is making with research support. A recent grant by the Alberta provincial government was recently awarded to the burn unit Dr’s Biernaskie and Gabriel to aid in skin research. This grant and direct support from the CFBTS is aimed towards “Autologous Adult Dermal Stem Cell Transplantation to Improve Function of Split Thickness Grafts”. What does this mean for firefighters and the public?

It has come to our attention an organization calling themselves “The Burn Victims Aid Society” or “BVAS” based out of Lethbridge, Alberta is approaching businesses across Canada representing themselves as a charity raising funds through the use of coin operated breathalyzer and prize vending machines. They purportedly claim to work and donate to the local firefighters and burn units. The Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society and the Foothills Medical Centre Burn Unit DO NOT condone, support or are in any way affiliated with the Burn Victims Aid Society.
