2013 Ladies Night Out

On Saturday April 13th at The Italian Club (416 1 Ave. NE) the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society is putting on our premiere event of the year… it’s the annual Ladies Night Out!

Ladies Night Out features a three course meal served by your very own firefighter, silent auctions, live auctions, door prizes, live music and firefighters everywhere! The 2013 Hotstuff Calendar Guys will also be in attendance!

Tickets are only $225 with all beverages included AND you’ll receive a $100 tax receipt. Doors open at 6:30pm. Every penny raised goes directly to the CFBTS to support the Burn Unit.

Expose Gala Fashion Show

On March 15th at Cowboys Nightclub the CFBTS and our famous Hotstuff Guys are teaming up with Exotic Moments Lingerie to bring you the sexy Expose Gala II Fashion Show!

The Expose Gala II Fashion Show is a must see event featuring the latest in spring designs with a few surprises thrown in! The silent auction will be in support of the CFBTS, along with door prizes and a performance by the Great Elvis. A few of the Hotstuff guys may even be on stage! This is going to be quite the event!

Alberta Innovates Grant for Burn Research

With the assistance of the CFBTS Dr. Jeff Biernaskie and Dr. Vincent Gabriel of the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Centre have received the Alberta Innovates Provincial Grant! This $1.125 million dollar grant provides funding for at least three years to help improve wound healing for burn survivors. The CBFTS is also proud to announce we have contributed an additional $300,000 dollars to the three year project.

This grant and direct support from the CFBTS is aimed towards “Autologous Adult Dermal Stem Cell Transplantation to Improve Function of Split Thickness Grafts”. The research is exploring new methods using adult stem cells to improve the function of skin grafts used to help heal burn wounds focusing on the deep dermis layer of skin. Listen to Dr. Biernaskie and Dr. Gabriel explain the process in this video. It is estimated human trials could begin in a mere five years time.

Wildrose Charity Pint

The CFBTS is very proud after been chosen by the Wildrose Brewery for their “Charity Pint Program” for January & February. 25 cents from every pint of Wild Wheat Red Ale sold, will be donated to the CFBTS for these months. Brody Lingren Donation & Provincial Grant

Eight year old Brody Lindgren, with the blessing of his mother Heidi generously donated his piggy bank to the “Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society” (CFBTS) in November.

Brody’s generosity comes at a time of great leaps and bounds our Society is making with research support. A recent grant by the Alberta provincial government was recently awarded to the burn unit Dr’s Biernaskie and Gabriel to aid in skin research. This grant and direct support from the CFBTS is aimed towards “Autologous Adult Dermal Stem Cell Transplantation to Improve Function of Split Thickness Grafts”. What does this mean for firefighters and the public?

Our goal with support is to make healing from burn injuries quicker, less painful and have a more normal appearance. This research will also support healing non-fire injury related skin diseases that affect a large portion of the population. Support from this grant and the CFBTS will have wide ranging positive implications for skin health.

Along with a tour of Dr.Jeff Biernaskie’s lab, Brody was excited to meet the rest of the ‘team’ that is involved with research involving skin disease. Brody’s generosity will support the many initiatives spearheaded by the CFBTS.

Know Where Your Donations Are Going

It has come to our attention an organization calling themselves “The Burn Victims Aid Society” or “BVAS” based out of Lethbridge, Alberta is approaching businesses across Canada representing themselves as a charity raising funds through the use of coin operated breathalyzer and prize vending machines. They purportedly claim to work and donate to the local firefighters and burn units. The Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society and the Foothills Medical Centre Burn Unit DO NOT condone, support or are in any way affiliated with the Burn Victims Aid Society.

A reported incident in St. Albert, Alberta tells of how a child won a “Grand Prize” from a BVAS coin machine; in an attempt to claim said prize the child was then directed to a pornographic website. The machine has since been removed from this location and the RCMP have been contacted to investigate. Similar stories of people being mislead and false representation by the BVAS are popping up in Winnipeg, Port Coquitlam and Edmonton.

Again we emphasize your local burn treatment societies and local firefighters have no association with the BVAS. In fact, it should be noted a photo displayed prominently on the BVAS website depicting firefighters smiling with a child was copied without permission from a 2007 muscular dystrophy charity event held by our Brothers from the Adrian Volunteer Fire Department in Missouri.

Please ensure you are aware of where your donations are going, if you observe any breathalyzer/prize machines alleging to be supporting local firefighters, burn units or burn foundations please email or call us at 403-701-BURN. Furthermore, if you are approached by someone and you feel their actions are suspicious, you are encouraged to contact your local police department.
